What are your memories of elementary school math?
Maybe you loved it and it came easy for you. Or maybe it was something that was a little more challenging. I know as a kid, I never connected to math. Math always felt boring and I couldn’t see how it related to what I liked and wanted to do.
However, we all know that math is an integral part of life. That’s why we’re excited about our new partnership with the National Children’s Museum.
The Children’s Museum is an immersive learning playground where our students will focus on—you guessed it—math! This trip will show third graders how math is used in real life with fun hands-on activities. Students will check out exhibits about collecting data and engineering. They will also participate in an engineering design workshop where they’ll use Legos to learn how friction affects movement and stability.
This field experience is going to be a great opportunity for energetic kids who find it hard to sit still in class. With interactive exhibits like paper airplane engineering, LEGO car testing, and measuring the force of jumping, students can learn through play while actively engaging with their lessons.
Unlike many museums we visit, this one charges an admission fee of $18.95 per person. While Live It Learn It usually focuses on free places that students can visit with friends and family, it’s also important to give some students the chance to experience a space they might not otherwise visit. The curriculum is currently being developed and we look forward to sharing more as things progress!

Live It Learn It is excited to launch the Bridge the Gap Fund, in partnership with the DC Council and EmpowerED, to give PreK-12 teachers the boost they need to bring more experiential learning to their classrooms! Designed to break down financial and logistical barriers, this fund empowers educators to create engaging and interactive learning experiences that spark curiosity and deepen understanding.
LILI will be awarding grants ranging from $500-$5,000 to cover the costs of field trips, project-based learning, outdoor learning, and more. Applications are open, so if you know a DC educator who could benefit from some cash flow for their classroom, send them to liveitlearnit.org/bridgethegap.
