For She's a Jolly Good Fellow

After two impactful years, Maya (or affectionately known as "Ms. H" with our students and teachers), will be concluding her fellowship with us this Friday. We are beyond grateful for her contributions to the Live It Learn It team and community. Maya will be based in Baltimore, finishing her master's degree in museum studies through the Krieger School of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University. Read on to learn more from Maya's perspective about her experience as a Fellow.

What has changed for you since you started the Fellowship?
When I first started at LILI I had never taught in a classroom setting. Coming from a history and museum studies background, my contributions had been aligned with PhD-level research projects – not children’s programming. This experience has taught me that the focus of storytelling using different perspectives allows young learners to feel included in the story. It is truly inspiring to see the work in collaboration with young students. Moving forward, I’ll be sure to keep children’s programming at the forefront of my mind in my role with museums.

What impact do you think Live It Learn It (LILI) brings to the community?
LILI is a great example of how an organization can provide access and resources to students and inspire them to look at their communities and question how they can contribute using their own strengths and abilities. LILI makes students feel heard and valued while having fun in and out of the classroom.
What would you say to supporters LILI about this work?
In all my experience studying nonprofits and working in museum and public history spaces, I have never seen an organization more effectively fulfill its mission by investing in resources that ensure students have access to learning opportunities.

Unlocking the Past

Have you ever visited the Lockkeeper’s House? It’s the oldest building on the National Mall and was a new addition to our outdoor experience for DMV educators as part of the Washington International School Institute for Teachers (WISSIT) Museum Day.

Maryam and Sierra led educators around the National Mall, focusing on sites involved in the Civil Rights Movement. At the Lockkeeper’s House the group discovered it was the original starting point for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Next time you’re on the Mall, make sure you check out this gem. It was a great experience
but don’t take our word for it. Here’s what participants shared:
  • Our leaders were amazing!!!! Learned so much and will be reaching out to Live It Learn It to partner with them for my DCPS school. Can't wait to be a thought partner!
  • The activities were thoughtfully designed and helped us, as students, activate our knowledge, take perspectives, converse together and actively put ourselves back in history.
  • This was a wonderful experience! I hope you will continue to offer this opportunity for other educators and students. Thank you for sharing this gift!
