Winter 22-23

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Dear Friend,

A new year at Live It Learn It has begun and we are so excited for what’s in store! While we may have new faces, new positions, and new ideas, we remain committed to the same mission
 – delivering innovative, engaging experiential learning opportunities for our students. As the new Co-Executive Directors, we take great pride in what we bring to the table as a small nonprofit in Washington, DC. Our staff continues to go above and beyond to ensure we meet our programming goals, our fundraising efforts, and implement curriculum changes consistent with DCPS standards.

We also want to recognize Dr. Michelle Edwards for her six years of visionary leadership and diligence on behalf of young students in Washington, DC. We value the LILI community that Dr. Edwards cultivated, and we look forward to nourishing and strengthening these partnerships as LILI continues to grow and evolve.

We are thrilled to share the Winter issue of The Progress Report with you, featuring updates on our expanding curricula, new hires, and our latest video. We want to especially thank you for making our end-of-year fundraising campaign such a success. Your investment in our work continues to provide experiential learning opportunities in imaginative ways for both students and teachers. As we carry on this spring, we are proud to have you by our side.

Sincerely,

Erin McSpadden & Maryam Trowell

Their Words, Their City

So far this school year, our students have ventured through the historical and cultural treasures of this city, including Ford's Theatre, the National Zoo, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of African Art, and the National Museum of the American Indian. From eyes widening at the sight of President Obama’s portrait at the NPG to voices squealing when an Aracari flies by in the Amazonia House at the zoo, our students are experiencing the rich wonders this city has to offer. We can’t help but capture some of their reflections and reactions during our field experiences!

This is Not Your Land

In our unit, A Forced Removal, students investigate the consequences of the westward expansion during the early 1800s. Our fifth graders explore the halls of the National Museum of the American Indian to learn more about the impact of the Indian Removal Act, the Trail of Tears, and their long-lasting effects on Native Americans today. Students actively unpack why this all took place, revealing that institutions of power don’t always have the best intentions. Back in the classroom, they have the opportunity to reflect on and deepen their learning by using quotes, numbers, and symbols to tell the story of the Trail of Tears from their own perspective. One student shared, "I learned that 67,000 Native Americans were removed from their homes just because Andrew Jackson signed a piece of paper."

If you are curious to learn more yourself, we highly recommend paying the National Museum of the American Indian a visit!
